DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING COURSE

Open Space has been working with documentary films for the past year, primarily through screenings and moderated discussions for students, citizens and civil society organisations. We have regular screenings of documentaries that raise questions and encourage debate on rights, sustainable development and social justice issues.

Of all the media and methods we have engaged with, we find that documentary films and related discussions are our most effective means of building awareness and raising consciousness among young people on a wide range of issues . Therefore, we feel that we are in a position to help young people (students, activists and members of CSOs) appreciate the many uses of documentary films as well as enable them to make their own films.

The course will guide participants through the process of making films on socially-relevant themes and issues. Faculty will help participants choose issues and develop appropriate perspectives on the material they would like to present. The course will run over 40 days (including teaching, shooting and post-production) beginning August 31 through to October 10.

Registration for the complete course is closed. Those interested in attending the first ten lectures on documentary theory and appreciation can call Open Space and speak to Renu, Suparna or Arshia for more information (registration fee applicable, ten seats only on a first come first served basis).
August 31 – October 10

LITERATURE

Talking Poetry
(presented by Open Space for the Word and the British Library)

Talking Poetry is part-workshop and part-discussion group. We will:
·examine poetic forms and start to think differently about the way we express ourselves
·consider why some poems move us and others don't
·whet our curiosity about language, line length, tricks of grammar and sheer poetic beauty
·sharpen our aesthetic skills

Talking Poetry is also a space where your poems could be discussed. Your work could be published in the poetry section of the Open Space website (http://www.openspaceindia.org) that seeks to foster change through the innovative and strategic use of media and the arts.

Talking Poetry is led by Priyaa Sarukkai Chabria, poet and novelist. She has been awarded the Senior Fellowship to Outstanding Artists for Literature by the Indian government.
