Open Space – Talking Poetry as part of its outreach through the medium of poetry invites you to a launch-cum-reading of the anthology, As Is Where Is, a collection of English poetry of the distinguished poet Dilip Chitre, published by Poetrywala, an English Imprint of Abhidhanantar Prakashan, Mumbai.
Readings from the book by Dilip Chitre followed by an informal discussion.
As Is Where Is:
Dilip Chitre writes on a grand scale and the finest of details can lie in the grandeur. He frequently places his subjects…music, painting, the seasons, the cosmos, poetry and, inevitably, age and illness in Death’s sight, and makes them grander for it. This abundantly rich collection, contains the work of a lifetime, brimming over with the taste for life.
– Adil Jussawala
Dilip Chitre was born in Baroda, India, in 1938. During the latter part of his childhood he lived in Mumbai/Bombay. From 1975 to 1976 he participated in the International Writing Programme at the University of Iowa. He writes and translates in two languages: Marathi and English. In 1994 Chitre won India’s national literature prize, the Sahitya Academy Award, for one of his collections of Marathi poetry. He also received a Sahitya Academy Award for his translation of 17th century poems by the Marathi poet Tukaram. Chitre has published 18 books to date, most recently the translation of a 3200-line poem by Shri Jnandev, a 13th century Marathi poet.
Abhidhanantar, edited by a young Marathi poet Hemant Divate, is one of the foremost little magazines in Marathi today. It has been around for almost a decade and half. It was one of the earliest literary magazine and literary movement in Marathi to recognize and respond creatively to the powerful forces of globalization which were rapidly transforming Indian society, culture and life. Abhidhanantar gave generous attention to the linguistic, cultural and literary changes taking place in the last 15 years and the crises of identity they generate.
