Open Space screens SheWrite (dir: K. P Jayasankar and Anjali Monteiro), 55 mins, Tamil with English subtitles, 2005

SheWrite weaves together the narratives and work of four Tamil women poets. The film traverses diverse modes of resistance, through images and sounds that evoke the universal experiences of pain, anger, desire and transcendence. A discussion and interactive session with the film makers will follow.

Talking Poetry, presented by Open Space for the Word and the British Library
Talking Poetry is part workshop and part discussion group. We will:

Talking Poetry is also a space where your poems could be discussed. Your work could be published in the poetry section of the Open Space website (http://www.openspaceindia.org) that seeks to foster change through the innovative and strategic use of the arts.

Talking Poetry will be led by Priyaa Sarukkai Chabria, poet and novelist. She has been awarded the Senior Fellowship to Outstanding Artists for Literature by the Indian government.

YOUTH & SEXUALITY with SAMAPATHIK TRUST at Open Space, Wednesday, July 12, 6.00pm to 7.30pm

As part of the ongoing sessions on youth and issues of gender and sexuality, Samapathik Trust invites you to a lecture followed by a discussion on the Petition for the amendment of IPC 377.

Under section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, all non-procreative sexual acts are defined as unnatural and illegal. A petition was filed by Naz foundation India (New Delhi) to amend this act. This session will address the following areas:
1. Reasons for filing the petition
2. Discussion of the petition
3. Progress in the courts till date

 
 
RIGHT TO INFORMATION CLINIC
 

RIGHT TO INFORMATION at Open Space, Saturday, July 23 , 4:00pm to 7.00pm

The Right to Information Act empowers citizens to demand accountability  from those who have been assigned to govern on behalf of the people. Under the Maharashtra Right to Information Act, 2002, any citizen can demand information from state government departments and public bodies including the Municipal Corporation. Yet, many citizens are still not aware of the modalities of requisitioning information.

Walk in at Open Space on July 23rd between 4.00 and 7.00pm to receive individual counselling and guidance on the use of the RTI Act from experts. The panel will comprise Prakash Kardaley, Senior Editor, Express Initiatives, The Indian Express.

Open Space for the word invites you to a reading of poems by Dibyajyoti Sarma, a recent post-graduate from the Dept of English, University of Pune.

The need for an audience has prompted poet Dibyajyoti Sarma to write in English, though his poetic sensibilities remain Assamese, his mother tongue. His first collection of poems, ‘Glimpses of a Personal History' reflect the conflict between rural idylls and cosmopolitan lifestyles.
