BOOK TASTING

Wednesday, January 10, 2007, 6.00pm – 8.00pm, at Open Space
Open Space invites readers to its monthly Book Tasting to read, exchange and discuss books that have touched them, changed them, validated or helped crystalise their thoughts. The books brought to the evening can range from fiction to non-fiction, children’s books, poetry etc.

Each participant who brings along a book makes a brief introduction to the book and its context, and then reads out a few passages that best illustrate the book’s qualities and why it has touched him/her. Each reading is followed by a short interaction.

Book Tastings are held twice a month and are open to all. The sessions are moderated by columnist Gauri Dange.

THEATRE WORKSHOP

Thursday, January 11, 2007 to Sunday, January 14, 2007, 2.00pm – 6.00pm, at Open Space
OPEN SPACE AND THE COMPANY THEATRE (BOMBAY) conducts a 4-day theatre workshop which included watching performances by the CHORUS REPERTORY THEATRE.

Sujay Saple (of The Company Theatre’s Evam Youth Forum) leads you through movement based theatre exercises that help you explore your imagination and express your emotions without words. Using improvisation, observation, posture, voice and speech, concentration, visual imagery, and mime, the group will explore theatrical language and the use of metaphor on stage.

Each evening, the group will attend the Chorus Repertory Theatre Festival in Pune. The performances include Chakravyuh, Ritusamharam and Nine Hills and a Valley, directed by Ratan Thiyam, one of the country’s leading theatre practitioners whose path-breaking work uses traditional Manipuri theatre techniques to illuminate the contemporary human condition. Thiyam uses the lyricism of north-eastern music and dance to throw light on political violence and the destruction of our worlds as well as the crisis of modernity that affects individuals in society.

The performances will form the basis of the group’s discussions of how political ideas are expressed through metaphor, how Thiyam’s work is amongst the finest expositions of political and personal issues, how participants can appreciate and understand performances better with newer and more critical approaches as audience members. These discussions will be led by Nirmala Ravindran, Special Correspondent with India Today, who writes on the arts and culture.

Workshop sessions (movement and discussion) will be held at Open Space from 2 to 6 pm (including a short tea break).
The group will attend the performances together at YB Chavan Auditorium (Jan 11, 12 and 13) and Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir (Jan 14).

Do you wonder what ‘globalisation’ really means?
Why does the debate over globalisation continue to rage even though the Indian economy shows a healthy growth rate?
Are the rules of trade fair? If they are, why are so many farmers committing suicide and so many others being thrown out of livelihoods?

Open Space conducted a 3-day workshop ON GLOBALISATION WITH A SPECIAL FOCUS ON INDIA: ITS HISTORY, IMPLICATIONS AND ITS PROSPECTS.

The workshop was conducted by Dr. Aseem Shrivastava from Monday Jan 22nd 2007 to Wednesday Jan 24th 2007 between 2 and 6pm at Open Space.

Aseem Shrivastava has a doctorate in Economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He taught Economics at universities in India and the US for many years and most recently taught Philosophy at Nordic College, Norway. He writes on issues of contemporary concern (globalization, US foreign policy etc.) for a number of magazines and websites, including Outlook, Z and Counterpunch.
