OPEN SPACE FOR BHOPAL (with Greenpeace & the Centre for Environment Education)

 

On the 20 th anniversary of the world’s worst industrial disaster, OPEN SPACE organises a series of events to highlight the problem of industrial pollution/hazards and the extent of environmental toxicity today

Miles To Go (Dir: Nina Subramani) A journey through the toxic hotspots of India, across 6,000 km and seven states. The film will be presented by Sanjeev Gopal, campaigner for Greenpeace

Bhopal Express (Dir: Mahesh Mathai) This feature film is a fictionalized recreation of the events of the night of December 3, 1984, when 40 tonnes of methyl isocyanate gas from the Union Carbide factory spread across Old Bhopal, leaving 8,000 people and 500,000 injured. The film has won several international awards

A presentation on the management of natural and industrial disasters by the Centre for Environment Education (CEE) and the release of CEE’s manual on disaster management

InfoChange Agenda
The first issue of InfoChange Agenda, a quarterly dossier published by CCDS on issues concerning social justice and sustainable development, focuses on industrial pollution 20 years after Bhopal. Copies of the dossier will be available at OPEN SPACE throughout the week marking the 20 th anniversary of the Bhopal gas tragedy.

Human Chain& Candlelight Vigil
OPEN SPACE invites all its members to participate in a Human Chain & Candlelight Vigil to mark the anniversary of the Bhopal gas tragedy. This is a Greenpeace initiative for World Action Day on Bhopal

KHOJ (coordinated by Open Space & Aalochana), an informal meeting to discuss issues related to identity, gender, sexuality, aspiration and relationships, meets once a fortnight, on Wednesdays, in December The first meeting in December will begin with presentations by participants on the theme of ‘Gender Representation in Mainstream Media.’

PRESENTATIONS
 

OPEN SPACE hosts a presentation and workshop on biodiversity organised by Kalpavriksh, an environmental action group. The workshop will provide an introduction to Pune’s rich biological diversity, both in its ecosystem and species, through a lecture and slide presentation. The workshop will also enable participants to create posters and other campaign material for the Kalpavriksh ‘Eco-Mela’ to be held in December.

OPEN SPACE and Kalpavriksh invite you to a screening of In the Light of Reverence(Dir: Christopher Mcleod). This documentary is about the struggle of native Americans to gain control over their traditional sacred sites. “This film is a wake-up call for anyone who cares about the environment and human rights” – Robert Redford.
