MONTHLY WORKSHOPS ON GENDER & SEXUALITY

Tuesday, July 1, 2008, 5.00pm to 7.00pm, at Open Space
Welcome to PUNE FIRST!

Pune city, the erstwhile ‘pensioner’s paradise’ has over the years rapidly transformed
into a bustling mega city. There is rapid change to be seen everywhere. Be it the city’s roads,
its educational institutions, the IT boom, the building industry, the cosmopolitan profile of
its people, there is a ‘work in progress’ board to be seen everywhere!

To address some of these concerns, Open Space has initiated a series of six monthly workshops
titled, ‘Pune First’ that are intended to bring the city’s Gen Next, face-to-face with the rapidly changing face of Pune city. Through guided lectures and interaction by city-based experts in the fields of geography, heritage conservation, town planning, air pollution, sociology and urban planning, the workshop will enable young people to get to know Pune, walk its streets, talk to its people, measure its pollution, count its trees and report on its history, heritage and environment.

WALK THE TALK!

How many times have people told you that Pune is a historical city, the city of the Peshwas, the land of Shivaji Maharaj and Lokmanya Tilak. A city steeped in history and more importantly, heritage buildings.

But have you ever been on a heritage walk in good old Pune?!

Come July 1 and allow architect Sharvey Dhongde talk to you about heritage and more heritage and finally take you on a heritage walk through the lanes and bylanes that were once frequented by none other than Bajirao Peshwa and Bal Gangadhar Tilak!

Allow history and heritage seep through your system!

Come join Open Space’s, second ‘Pune First’ workshop on things close to every young Punekar’s heart… history, heritage, bio-diversity, air pollution, town  planning and sociology!

Sharvey will expose youngsters to :

a)         The meaning of the term, ‘Heritage’
b)         The Development versus Heritage debate

He will also take the student volunteers on a ‘heritage walk’ through the old city area and introduce them to heritage structures. Volunteers will have to prepare a project report on the existing infrastructure deficiencies, which prevent ‘heritage walks’ from becoming a permanent feature of this historical city.

Besides writing a project report, volunteers will also be encouraged to write a newspaper report for
a news supplement of a city based national daily.

Other experts like Anita Benninger, director, Centre for Development and Advocacy Studies (CDSA) will speak on bio-diversity, Sadhana Naik, deputy director, town planning, Government of Maharashtra, will speak on town planning, Dr Sundeep Salvi, director, Chest Research Foundation (CRF), will speak on air pollution and Prof Shruti Tambe, professor, Department of Sociology, University of Pune will speak on the Changing face of the Pune’s population in subsequent ‘Pune First’ workshops in the coming months.

City based freelance journalist and Lead Fellow, Rahul Chandawarkar is facilitating the ‘Pune First’ workshops.

GENDER!
LET’S TALK!

Gender roles and relationships are changing, evolving and expanding every day. Just last week, the world media documented the case of a man who was once a woman, giving birth to a baby. Open Space announces a monthly forum where you can discuss, debate and share your experiences, understanding and anxieties about identity, gender, sexuality, relationships, rights etc.

Open Space, the youth outreach programme of CCDS, will conduct a 2-day workshop every month –- for the next six months -- titled ‘Let’s Talk’.

‘Let’s Talk’ will engage participants through talks, lectures, discussions, interactive games, film screenings, theatre, campaigns and field visits, to arrive at a personal as well as political understanding of gender, sexuality, masculinities, rights and associated issues.

‘Let’s Talk’ will act as a workshop platform as well as an informal meeting forum for college students and working professionals to exchange ideas and share experiences. The objective is to equip participants to find pathways for the creation of more gender-just personal and public spaces, and to help develop positive acceptance of diverse sexualities and rights.

The monthly workshop series will be anchored by Anand Pawar, director SAMYAK. A trained social worker, Anand is a young man with extensive experience of working with various age-groups as a trainer on issues related to gender, sexuality and masculinities. He has also been actively advocating these issues through research and activism.

Every workshop will comprise 2 sessions over 2 consecutive days; an input session followed by an activity session.

The first session will be held on Monday, July 14, 2008, 5.00pm to 7.00pm

FOLLOW YOUR HEART YOUTH OUTREACH WORKSHOPS

MONTHLY OUTREACH

Wednesday, July 2, 2008, 5.00pm to 6.30pm, at Open Space

The Chinese have a saying:

“The duck’s legs are short, but if we were to lengthen them, the duck will feel pain. A crane’s legs are long, but if we try to cut off a portion of the legs, the crane will feel grief. We are not to amputate what by nature is long and lengthen what by nature is short.”

FOLLOW YOUR HEART!

A workshop for young students conducted by Rahul Chandavarkar, freelance journalist. The ‘Follow Your Heart’ workshop, is an Open Space initiative, which aims to foster dialogue and discussion amidst students on the possibilities for a non-mainstream choice of careers and educational streams.

Open Space is the outreach programme of the Centre for Communication and Development Studies, Pune (www.ccds.in) which develops and implements strategic and innovative methods of communication to inform and inspire change in societal attitudes and public policy.

Too many youngsters today are either following the herd instinct or ending up in courses and vocations that are in complete contrast to their inner calling.

Alternately, they are being forced into courses and vocations by their parents and elders often with disastrous consequences. Here’s a workshop that’ll open your eyes and help you make that crucial choice!!
